Bord Bia consider it vitally important that in the current year a significant and
sustained promotional drive is put in place to highlight and promote the
demand for locally grown produce and plants. This prompted the launch of a
campaign to focus on gardening with the consumer and to create an interest and excitement around spring gardening. Over the last two years poor weather at critical times has had a negative impact on gardening and in particular on the sale of plants. In 2009, it is important that gardeners who have had very little opportunity to engage in gardening  are reminded of this rewarding and relatively low cost activity.

They must be encouraged to visit garden centres and other locations where plants and related products and services can be accessed. The gardening season traditionally commences around St. Patrick’s Day and to coincide with this Bord Bia launched its Spring Gardening Campaign in March. An integrated PR campaign ‘Its Garden Time’ involving retailers, designers and contractors was rolled out using regional and national media channels.

In support of the campaign a series of regional workshops were held in February at which participants were given advice on how to conduct a targeted PR and direct marketing campaign in their locality and how they could link in with the national campaign when it rolls out. A dedicated website supports the campaign informing the general public of the benefits of gardening. There are opportunities for businesses to participate in promotional activities through the website. www.bordbia.ie/it’sgardentime
